BankID requirement
Using the "nettbank"
BankID is an electronic identification and signature method used in Norway to confirm a person’s identity online. It offers secure authentication and digital signing, which can be used to log into public services, online banks, and other websites requiring identification.
How BankID Works
- Creation: To obtain BankID, contact your bank and identify yourself securely, typically by visiting the bank in person and showing identification.
- Authentication: When using BankID to log into a service, you enter your national identification number, and confirm your identity with a password and a one-time code (usually via a code device or the BankID app).
- Digital Signature: BankID can also be used to sign documents digitally, carrying the same legal weight as a handwritten signature.
Uses of BankID
- Online Banking: Widely used for logging in and conducting transactions in online banks.
- Public Services: Many public services, such as the Tax Administration, NAV, and healthcare, use BankID for secure login.
- Private Services: Insurance companies, telecommunications providers, and other private entities use BankID to identify customers.
Security
- Two-Factor Authentication: BankID uses two-factor authentication (2FA), which involves something you know (password) and something you have (code device or mobile phone).
- Encryption: All communication between the user, BankID servers, and service providers is encrypted to protect sensitive information.
Benefits
- Security: BankID provides high security and protects against identity theft and fraud.
- User-Friendly: Easy to use for various services with a single login.
- Legal Validity: Digital signatures with BankID have legal validity.
Types of BankID
- BankID on Mobile: Allows authentication and signing via mobile phone without needing a code device.
- BankID on File: An older method where BankID is stored on a file on the computer.
BankID is a crucial component in the digitalization of services in Norway, and its widespread use and ease of use have made it a popular choice for secure electronic identification.
